71. Beware
When you use chat rooms and Web dating / matchmaking services, beware!

To illustrate the methods used by the dating site cheats I can do no better than quote some recent reports from people who have been approached by the criminals. You may well have arrived here because you very sensibly decided to carry out a search on a suspect name or location. Once you have read this page you will be able to decide if you have become a target of the fraudsters. NB The criminals are cunning and have been known to groom victims for months. They may not make a request for money (or the cashing of a forged cheque) in the early stages, but remember, they can be harvesting your personal details from day one. The pictures below, except where noted otherwise, are samples of those they pick up around the Web and use to establish their fake identities. If the real subjects get in touch, they can be removed on request. No doubt there are legitimate Internet dating services but the writer suspects that certain sites have been set up for the purpose of fraud. Please take care.

They steal pictures like these for use in the scams, but see the real pictures of fraud criminals in the section below ...

You can report Yahoo chat abuse directly to Yahoo here. You can report to us via the address at the foot of the page.
This is how the criminals may introduce themselves:
(NB They will need to adopt a rather cosmopolitan persona for several reasons. First of all they need to establish a false location in case of future investigation. They need an excuse for the obvious mistakes of grammar, punctuation, spacing, capitalisation etc. which are common in their messages and exemplified in the sample below. Most of all, they need to prime victims for the sting - when they ask for money to be sent, via Western Union, to an overseas address.)
"I am a 27 year old single white female that has never been married, I was born and raised in winter haven, Florida. I'm a native america and 100 % cherokee tribe, I am in Nigeria currently, I lost my Dad when i was 2 years old and my Mom have always been taking care of me but i can do that on my own now..I Mom took me to Nigeria when she was transfer to Nigeria in her missionary work to Nigeria, that's what lead me to Nigeria and i use the influence to get my BA in Accounting in Nigeria, I have finished my  colledge now thought i just concluded the BA but my Mom had move to belgium due to another re-transfer but i am still in Nigeria , I am currenly working as a sales girl in a Boutique and they sell female cloths only,I love my Job so much because it's base on commission payment and it's gives me time for other thing, though i don't earn much but i always've alot of free time.I do come to the state more often and the last time i come to the state was January and i spend 3 weeks in cypress motel , winter haven..that was my last trip out of Nigeria and place i have visited in my like are:auburn in NY.bedford in Texas.mocksville in NC,ganiesville in Geogia and winter haven is my birth place I love kids but do not currently have any of  my own, but actively hoping that will change in the future. Most people would describe me as being a honest, trust- worthy and very dedicated person. I am very easy going, open-minded, and liberal person. I am a true romantic at heart and have a very sensitive and gentle disposition. Definitely not in to head games and always believe that honesty is the best policy. I am also a animal and nature lover.
As far as interests mine are many and varied. I am comfortable doing or trying anything at least once.  I really love the outdoors, sports, health and fitness, reading, computers, etc. I am not much into the night club or bar scene. I am slightly more introverted than extroverted but am good at communicating one on one or in small groups. I have been told that I am an excellent listener and problem solver, which I think  is a plus. If any of these characteristcs sound like what you are loooking for in a friend or mate, then feel free to get back intouch with me. Also do not be shy about asking any questions you have of me,  that I may not have answered, because that is the only way we learn about one another. This're what I am looking for in a  relationship, I am looking for honest, good  looking, sexy, respectful, easy going, open-minded and trust-worthy person and beside I'm not looking for someone to live  with, I'm looking for someone I can't live without and i'm also   looking for someone, who can take as much as I give, give back as much as I need, and still have the will to live. my e-mail  adress is
maltababy2005@yahoo.com,  and my yahoo IM is  maltababy2005 ..all this have tells more about me and if you  have any question , you can ask me anythings.I look forward to  hearing from you if you choose to respond back and like I said, I  will answer whatever questions you still have, just ask. Take care and hope you are having a great day..."  A correspondent reports: "...  she is asking for me to send a hand written letter saying how much I love her and that I want to marry her, I'm assuming that she needs this to get a visa."

They would like you to receive parcels. Many reputable companies will not deliver to Nigeria because of its world wide reputation for corruption and fraud. The criminals will therefore order goods using a stolen card, and ask that they be delivered to your address. They will ask you to send the goods on to Nigeria. There follows an example from July 2006:
Contact made via big church.com. Fake name Stan Duru, care109. Using funcursleyc222@yahoo.com , funcursleyc222,  lucie_daddys_best@yahoo.com. Has asked for goods (like cameras) to be sent to  Alex Martins or Stan duru,  8 Obadina Street, adule oja, yaba,  lagos, nigera 23401. Pretends this is an orphanage. Tel. no. given 0112348022515199. The scammer claims to have been living in Silver Springs, Maryland and uses name of Humanity First, 15000 Good Hope Road.
A conversation with a criminal, November '05. Worried that others may be conned ...
"I had an experience which I would like to share with others. I was lucky and lost no money, but the method was so good that I fear it might affect many people out there. Would be great if you could post my report on your great website.
Was chatting to a lady I met in one of those friendfinder matchmaking sites. She told me she was a model (which I believed of course due to the attractive pics she sent). She lives in Nigeria...
After a few messages she needed me urgently for a special 'transaction'. Her model agency from UK booked her for a shooting session, but they only pay via cheque. Since the poor lady does not have any bank account, she cannot cash-in the cheque. So she needs me as her "agent" to cash the cheque to my account and send the money to her. Via Western Union (!) A little experienced of scams, I doubted all of that. The lady began to ask me to send her some money in advance (never do that!). I waited and was totally sure I will never receive any cheque...
Big surprise, I received an international mail with a cheque enclosed, 5000 Euro on my name! Wow this was the first time I thought that maybe I was misled and this poor lady was really serious and trusted me so much that she sent me 5000 Euros through her model agency!
Brought the cheque to the bank and asked them whether it was valid. They said it looks ok, and submitted it. One day later my bank account received the 5000 Euros! Wow I was feeling bad to have mistrusted this beautiful lady, and wanted to get the 5000 Euro to send it to her immediately via Western Union.
Thank God my bank told me that having the money on my account does not necessarily mean that the cheque is valid! A foreign cheque needs at least 7-10 days to get checked. So they advised me to wait at least for that period.
Ok I waited (had a hard time because I feared that I kept this money from that nice lady for myself without trust) and on the 10th day, exactly when I wanted to send the 5000 Euros via Western Union, the bank called and told me that the cheque had been refused because it was a fake!
Oh wow this was close. So this was a typical scam from Nigeria. No idea whether this lady is really existing, or if she maybe has just been used. Regardless, whover was behind this fake, they almost made me lose 5000 Euros! Ok I did not get damaged, and especially the Nigeria Scam sites on the Internet helped me a lot and warned me to be careful - that's why I wanted to post this experience to all of you. There are lots of poor nice sexy African ladies out there in the Internet, and I still hope that most of them are for real (NO, they are not! - J.W.)  But if you ever get a cheque from them, please be careful and wait for verification. You might save a lot of your own money!"

68. Dangers of Internet Dating

Dangers of Internet Dating
The day has come when internet dating is considered a legitimate way of meeting new people in the endless search for the right person. Chat rooms have replaced bar rooms, and internet dating sites and personal ads no longer have the "stigma" that they once did. You may still get a raised eyebrow when telling people you are using the internet for your search for the perfect date, but no where close to the reaction you would have gotten years ago. Internet dating has gained popularity by leaps and bounds, and unfortunately, so have the dangers and horror stories some have encountered.

The anonymity of internet dating has afforded con artists a new playground for scams, and has allowed people to be anyone they think you want them to be because they are engaging you primarily through the written word. This site is not meant to bring forth the message that its impossible to find love through internet dating, but to inform people of the dangers that are out there. Internet dating is still a relatively new way of people connecting with people from all over the globe, and people need to understand the dangers out there so they can make their search a safe one. Included in this site or stories from those that have been there, and are willing to share their experiences with others in an effort to educate people and learn from their mistakes. If you have a story and would like to share your experiences with internet dating and dating websites please feel free to email it to us!

Internet dating has been portrayed mostly with "success stories", because many of those who have had bad experiences are too embarrassed to talk about them openly, thinking they are the rarity, or the "unlucky one".  Movies and T.V. have also focused on the lighter side of internet dating and dating websites as opposed to the darker side. What's tricky here is people WANT to believe they are going to find what they are looking for (nothing wrong with that) and DON'T want to believe someone may be lying to them or playing games. They think they are "too smart" to fall for b.s., and it is that attitude that leaves them wide open to be proven wrong. If you are planning to surf the internet with high hopes and expectations, arm yourself with the knowledge of what to avoid and what to watch out for, so you have the best possible chance of a positive outcome.

Unfortunately there are many hidden dangers in the world of internet dating, and it's up to you to recognize the signs and red flags so that your internet dating experience stands the best chance of success, rather than leaving a bad taste in your mouth.

The internet dating "scene" is one of the easiest places for someone to cheat on their spouse or significant other, or to use the internet dating area as a place for promiscuity. The danger of long-distance internet romance is it is extremely easy for someone already involved with a partner to go out and cheat in a relatively safe (for them) environment. Get a secret email address, create a persona, and have a cel phone and, if necessary a p.o. box and your all set!!! Many times, before someone can verify that all they have been told over the internet by someone they are interested in dating is the truth, they are already emotionally vested and don't want to hear the truth, or get hurt by hearing the truth. You must realize the internet dating scene can be dangerous to those who don't take it seriously, and for those too trusting in nature. Please read further in the site to arm yourself with the knowledge you need to internet date safely, watch out for the signs of danger, and pay attention to EVERY red flag you see!!

Internet dating has proved to be successful for some, but statistics show it is not always successful for many, and the price for their internet dating experience in spades. The numerous horror stories of bad internet experiences can range from the humorous, to the deadly. If you have decided that you really want to try internet dating, remember to take it seriously, and play it safe. There are many numerous internet dating websites, that offer a variety of options, pick one that is right for you. The costs of internet dating websites  vary also, so shop around for the best value. You can also post or answer personal ads to meet your internet date. Many of these sites are free, with a simple registration. Internet dating websites often have numerous testimonials on their websites of how they met their soulmate or spouse using their internet dating service. What they won't put on their site however, is testimonials from people who have had bad experiences. Those you will find here! Please read our internet scam victims stories pages, and perhaps you can avoid an internet dating situation like they went through, or, if you have had a bad internet dating experience you wont feel so alone! Please feel free to send us your internet dating experiences with your permission to post your story.

We recently received the following letter from Carolle, who gave us permission to print her story:
"I was fooling around on the internet sending emails back and forth to some girlfriends of mine. One friend kept pressuring me to try internet dating since my dating life seemed to be going nowhere fast. She sent me an internet dating website and we started going through the profiles, and she helped me to make a profile of my own. We decided to leave it to fate and go through the ones that contact me first. This was how I met Matt, who lived in another state, but said he put an ad in mine because his job was re-locating him this year, so he may as well look for love where he was going to be living. This sounded reasonable at the time, but now, looking back on it, this was red flag number 1. We exchanged emails with more and more frequency, and seemed to have a lot in common. He asked for my phone number and I asked for his instead. He said that since he was moving he had disconnected his home phone number and only used his cel in preparation for his move. Again, this sounded like no problem, but should have been red flag number 2! We chatted on the phone, and he seamed anxious to meet, and said he would be in my area because he would be house hunting in a few months. So, we kept talking on the phone, and I began to notice he didn't answer my calls mainly during evenings and weekends. He said since work was paying for it, he had to limit his evening and weekend calls. Once again, this guy had an excuse for everything, and I should have seen this as red flag number 3! I went back on the internet dating site, and saw his profile was still active, even though we spoke everyday and planned to meet next month! (This red flag I did pay more attention to.) A friend told me she was writing to some men on the internet dating site from out of state, I decided just to browse, just to see what was out there. Guess who was? Matt was! He was in several different states, with several different "handles" but the one thing he did was keep the same photo. So, I asked my friend to help me set up a phony profile on the internet dating site to try and find out what he was up to. I wrote to him pretending to be a woman from a different state, far away from where I lived. We wrote back and forth and I got an email from him saying how he was going to be moving to THAT state in a few months, and was going to be in THAT area because THAT was where he was moving! I was fuming, I realized this was all a bunch of lies, this man was never moving to my town or any other, he was just using this internet dating site as a way to make false promises to women looking for something long term, it is obvious he had no plans to deliver! Now when I go to the internet dating sites, I only choose people that live in my area NOW. I recommend people looking for a long term relationship to start in their area!"
