All Saints' Day derives from the Celtic holiday called Samhain (meaning "the death of body") but as Christian feast it came to Poland in 12th century. It is a time of meditation and numerous visits to the cemetries where relations, of those who passed away, light candles on the graves. During All Saints' Day (and also All Souls' Day that is celebrated the day after - that is on the 2nd of November) Polish cemetries become unforgettable sight - and thousands of candles create exceptional atmosphere. It is especially worth visiting old monumental cemetries such as Rakowicki in Krakow - where fine architecture adds to the value of that sight. Cemetries (full of visitors) are open till late hours.
